When the Underdogs Win

When the St. Louis Cardinals clinched the National League Wild Card on the last day of the regular season, people throughout the Major League Baseball world were extremely surprised. The team seemed out of sync this season without one of their main aces, Adam Wainwright, out for the season. No one thought of them succeeding.

Slowly but surely the team persevered through the odds on favorites, the Phillies. Next, they took down National League Central opponents, the Brewers. When they won the series, Cardinals Nation rejoiced. The team never lost faith. Instead, they worked towards a common goal.

Now that the season is over, the team faces certain important questions:

1. Will Manager, Tony LaRussa, be resigned for another year?
There are many things to be considered with this situation. LaRussa was only signed to a one year contract last year. He’s impossible to not know that he is getting older. Retirement is surely in the future. I think all Cardinals fans hope he will be given a contract so he can retire from St. Louis.

2. Will Albert Pujols be granted a new contract?
The is on the minds of all of the MLB. The man is asking for a lot of money. Sure, this year he performed well, but is any player ever really worth that much? I personally hope Pujols will think about more than just money when he makes his decision. No matter where he goes, the asking price will be high. If he does end up with a different team and has an off-season, the fans will not react well. Instead, in St. Louis, the fans will always be supportive. Pujols is the face of the Cardinals and the fans love him.

Only the offseason will tell what will happen in these two important situations.

  1. GO CARDS! I hope Pujols will stay in St. Louis, we’ve been good to him and he should repay us with his loyalty.

It was an incredible run the Cardinals made. As a Royals fan, I decided that the Cards would be my playoff team since they are from the same state. Game six of the world series was one of the most incredible baseball games I have ever seen. As for Pujols, I honestly don’t think he will be wearing Cardinal red next season. People often say that since Pujols is such a key player, he wont leave following a championship. Key players have left after championship wins to bigger and better contracts. Some super-star athletes who have include: Deion Sanders, Patt Burrell and James Posey,
