Social Media

I know social media has already been discussed, however I want to give some different information. Did you know there are large companies out there that lack a solid social media presence? Hard to believe? Not really.

The company I interned with this summer did not have a social media presence until 6 months ago. The company has been going strong since 1956. While doing a lot of social media work for them this summer, it was amazing to me when the CEO would ask me what Facebook and Twitter are. Here we have great decision makers, making the company millions yet they do not know the value of social media.

I guess the reason I’m posting this is so everyone realizes that our addiction to social media may some day pay off.

I guess I never really considered that some companies dont have a strong social media presence. Maybe in a round-a-bout way it IS good that our generation is so well-versed on Facebook and Twitter. I myself just recently became a Twitter user and now cannot imagine not using it! It’s so addictive and not to mention a great way to disseminate a message in terms of businesses/organizations. I have never been on Twitter without seeing an ad or update from a business or celebrity. This is in part a direct result of who I “follow,” but think about it: my followers have followers and the people I follow also follow others, and so on and so forth. How crazy to imagine what Twitter and Facebook can do for an organization’s image/message dissemination!

It is very interesting that the technology we have grown up with and are so familiar with is completely foreign to people of generations past. There are so many tools that are very useful to companies on the internet, but they do not even know they exist! I think that is the change we are going to bring once we get out into the real world, and from talking with fellow PR students who have done internships, that is usually the job they are assigned to: social media. Once we get into their positions, we must keep in mind that “being up with the times” will be very beneficial for our company.
